Introduction

The education and training of an APRN follows a specific plan. In Houston, Nurse Practitioners may only treat patients under the close supervision of a physician for the duration of their employment. In addition, nurse Practitioners, like other nurses, must adhere to standards known as “competencies.” The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) developed core competencies, providing the basis for Nurse Practitioner coursework and practice. Leadership is the cornerstone of these skills. Hence, advanced practice nursing places a premium on leadership responsibilities. Effective leaders effect favorable changes in the workplace that improve care for patients.
