Patient’s Chief Complaints: “I was told that my blood pressure was high, and I needed to get it checked.”

History of Present Illness: Mark Jones is a 47-year-old African American male who is an executive at a law firm. Mr. Jones had his blood pressure taken at a screening program two day sago and was told that his BP was elevated to 158/92. He presents to the clinic because of the elevated blood pressure at the screening program. He complains of feeling tired but denies complaints of headaches, blurred vision, or dizziness. SOLUTION

Mark Q.1 Would you treat Mark’s blood pressure today? Why or why not? Mark has two known blood pressure readings >150/90. The general rule is to have three high readings before diagnosing and treating high blood pressure as office readings can be the result of white coat syndrome. However, Mark has a strong family history of cardiac conditions including hypertension. Additionally, Mark does report occasional headaches which may or may not be related to high blood pressure. Further assessment would be needed.
