SPH205: Interpersonal Communication

Instructions

Because interpersonal communication affects us and others, our interactions involve ethical choices. Describe a situation that involved an ethical choice and the communication practices that were used to address the issue. You can choose a personal experience or one that you know about.

Ethical issues could include whether or not to lie, withholding certain information from someone else, or passing on a message to a third party that was told in confidence. Explain the ethical situation was handled. (For example, did they avoid the decision at first? Did they engage in dual perspective to figure out why one person would want them to not tell others certain information, etc.?) 

Your response should be a one-page (300-350 words) report that makes informed references from this module’s materials. A grading rubric (how this assignment will be graded) is provided.

SOLUTION

In my previous assignment, it was a busy afternoon when a nurse friend of mine was attending to a middle-aged man suffering from hypertension. According to his blood pressure diary, he was way above the therapeutic target and hence the nurse added another antihypertensive drug to the patient’s regimen. She proceeded to write a prescription and faxed it to the pharmacy, promptly moving to attend to other patients. The following day, the nurse was summoned by the emergency room regarding the patient who had become dizzy in the morning.
