Read through a commercial magazine or online media source and identify a few examples of the generalized other’s perspective, focusing in particular on how the media define desirable women and men. How do these definitions and expectations affect us? How might this be a problem? Analyze these messages and discuss how you respond to them.

SOLUTION

The media tends to view desirable men women and men in pervasive ways. It defines the desirable woman as thin, having perfect hair, smooth-skinned, big hips, a naturally feminine body, with a small nose, among others. Conversely, the media views the describable man as being confident, strong, tall, possessing minimal emotion, physically fit, having a jawline, and generally being muscular. Such definitions develop expectations that affect us differently.
